October Student Profile…Joel Delong

Joel DeLong is a sophomore student at Iowa State University majoring in soft ware engineering.

He is the grandson of Jim and Phyllis Layman.

One of Joel’s favorite movies is the movie “Young Guns.”

“Software engineering is a difficult major,” he states, “but will lead to a lot of opportunities.”

“FREEDOM” is the best part about the college experience.

His word of wisdom to those in the older generation is, “Open yourself up to opportunities that will lead to the greatest success.”

The congregation of Percival Community Church wishes Joel every success in this academic year.

pcp 10971

This morning we enjoyed listening to our guest speaker, Lucy Akins R.N. Lucy is the Medical Services Supervisor at City Union Mission in Kansas City, Missouri.  She is also the granddaughter of Al and Carol Akins.  City Union Mission is an evangelical Christian  ministry committed to sharing the gospel and meeting the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of men, women, and children who are poor or homeless.   They do not receive government funding; and rely completely on support from individuals, businesses, foundations, organizations and churches. Here is some interesting information about this ministry.

-Holds after-school programs for low-income kids, including tutoring and life-skills classes.

-Is the only shelter in KC with infirmary beds for those ill or injured.

-Has a camp in the Ozarks, CAMP CUMCITO, for up to 500 low-income children during the summer.

-Has learning centers available to assist guests with building resumes, obtaining GED’s, SAT preparation, tutoring, and more.

-Operates the Hotline for the Homesless and directs people to actual shelter housing when available space is known.

-Serves 750 every day, on average.

-Provided over 150,000 beds for the weary last year.

Student Profile…Ethan Burge

Ethan Burge is in his second year of vocational education at Iowa Western Community College, majoring in Construction Technology, Ethan says, “It’s physical and fun and you learn something different every day.”  The hands on experience it offers has been the best part of the program. After he graduates he plans to immediately go into the work force in construction.  Have fun in life is Ethan’s words of wisdom to us in the ‘Boomer’ generation.  He enjoys Snickers candy bars and his favorite movie is “Act of Valor.”

The congregation of Percival Community Church supports Ethan in his college career path and our hope is that he is successful and continues to enjoy the work that he has chosen for his life.

From the Board Secretary

A brighter welcome right at our front step, kindly recovered with new carpet by Marty Shipley, should lift the spirit of any congregant or visitor to the church.  And soon doors newly repainted by an anonymous friend will open to the comfort of the sanctuary.  Thank you to the local community for blessed support of our parish.  Hopefully many of them will come and join our worship.

Hence, outreach and fellowship are the motives behind a Harvest Festival that is in consideration of next month.  Young people in particular, from the neighborhood and elsewhere, will be the target audience for an evening of riding, decorating, roasting and bobbing…involving hayracks, sugar  cookies, hotdogs, s’mores and apples.  Does that sound intriguing? No costume necessary, though anything that contributes to the howling success of the event will be appreciated.  Of course, we are all YOUNG at heart, and thus everyone is included in the event.

In the meantime, the Popcorn Festival is at hand, when volunteers are needed to cook pies or man the booth.  No cookies that melt in the sun to be sold this year.  The theme is to ‘keep it simple’.

By the way, Pastor Blaine may be visiting parishioners during the week sometimes, as his schedule might often make this more convenient than the usual Saturdays.  Enjoy the opportunity to talk with this learned scholar of the Bible, as fewer and fewer pastors actually go out and visit their flock.

Enjoy the Autumn weather!

Remembering…

tree-clipart-4

When leaving church recently Ardis Rogers and I were visiting. Standing South of the front steps where an evergreen had been cut down, Ardis commented “I helped plant that tree as a member of Best Ever Club.” If my memory is correct the tree was planted to honor our service men & women, living and one’s who gave their lives serving our country.  Especially representing Percival.

The 2012 Missouri River flood has raised in our lives more so, the heartbreak of losing beautiful trees, shrubs and etc.  How many of us took for granted the beauty of these trees and the important part they play in conservation and the atmosphere?  May we be more aware each day.

         -Mary Sherwood

As a side note to Mary’s article, the landscaping project planned for this past summer and delayed until Spring provides for the planting of a replacement tree. Money has already been given for the tree.  Funds for the landscaping project are still being received if you would care to make a contribution.
