 Suffering for Being a Christian

Leader: 12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal
that has come on you to test you, as though something strange
were happening to you.
All: 13 But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings
of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is
revealed.
Leader: 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ,
you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.
All: 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or
any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.
Leader: 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be
ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.
All: 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s
household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for
those who do not obey the gospel of God?
Leader: 18 And,
“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”
All: 19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will
should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue
to do good.

 Call to Worship, 1Peter 1:1-12

Prayer

Hymn  “Holy, Holy, Holy

Tithes and Offerings, Doxology

Hymn  “To God Be The Glory

Praise and Prayer

Responsive Reading: 1Peter 1:13-25  Be Holy

Leader: 13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set
your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is
revealed at his coming.
All: 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you
had when you lived in ignorance.
Leader: 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you
do;
All: 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
Leader: 17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work
impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear.
All: 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as
silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life
handed down to you from your ancestors,
Leader: 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without
blemish or defect.
All: 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was
revealed in these last times for your sake.
Leader: 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from
the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.
All: 22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth
so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply,
from the heart.
All: 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of
imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
Leader: 24 For,
“All people are like grass,
and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
All: 25 but the word of the Lord endures forever.”
Leader: And this is the word that was preached to you

Responsive Reading: Acts 12:11-19

Leader: 11 Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know
without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me
from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people
were hoping would happen.”
All: 12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of
Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people
had gathered and were praying.
Leader: 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant
named Rhoda came to answer the door.
All: 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed
she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the
door!”
Leader: 15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she
kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”
All: 16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the
door and saw him, they were astonished.
Leader: 17 Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet
and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison.
“Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he
said, and then he left for another place.
All: 18 In the morning, there was no small commotion among
the soldiers as to what had become of Peter.
Leader: 19 After Herod had a thorough search made for him
and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered
that they be executed.
