Call to Worship and Prayer: Isaiah 40:28-31

Hymn #454, “Trust and Obey

Offering and Doxology

Hymn #466, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus

Praise and Prayers

Responsive Scripture: Isaiah 40:18-26

18  With whom, then, will you compare God? To what image will you liken him?

19  As for an idol, a metalworker casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and fashions silver chains for it.

20  A person too poor to present such an offering selects wood that will not rot; they look for a skilled worker to set up an idol that will not topple.

21  Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded?

22  He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.

23  He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.

24  No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.

25  “To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.

26  Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.

Bringing back a memory.  Does anyone remember this little Hollyhock doll?  Don Shipley made it a few years back and brought it to church one Sunday.

Tiny hands and Sunday best,
Hollyhocks in bloom and rest.
Petals dressed in quiet grace,
cradled in a sacred place.
While hymns were sung and
 prayers were said,
a flower doll bowed her tiny head.
Childlike faith, so soft and small...
God smiled gently over all.

Offering and Doxology

Hymn #347, “All Creatures of Our God and King

Praise and Prayers

Responsive Scripture: Psalm 9:1-11

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.

2        I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.

My enemies turn back; they stumble and perish before you.

4        For you have upheld my right and my cause, sitting enthroned as the righteous judge.

5       You have rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked;  you have blotted out their name for ever and ever.

6       Endless ruin has overtaken my enemies, you have uprooted their cities; even the memory of them has perished.

The Lord reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment.

8       He rules the world in righteousness and judges the peoples with equity.

9       The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.

10     Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.

11     Sing the praises of the Lord, enthroned in Zion; proclaim among the nations what he has done.

Let's take a moment this day to lift up a prayer--not only for ourselves, but for others around the world who are hurting, struggling, or simply in need of a little grace.  Someone, somewhere, could really use that prayer today.
