Responsive Scripture: The Suffering and Glory of the Servant
Leader: Isaiah describes a very different kind of suffering. It’s the suffering of someone called a “servant,” a person who is “exalted and lifted very high” and yet now “appears disfigured, inhuman.” He will “astonish many nations” and silence kings.
All: See, my servant will act wisely: he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. Just as there were many who were appalled at him - his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being and his form marred beyond human likeness - so he will sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths because of him. (Isaiah 52:13-15)
Leader: Israel will see in this servant “what they haven’t seen before.” It will cause them to “ponder.” This suffering servant will grow up in their midst, an expression of “the Lord’s arm.” And yet, because he has no hint of “splendor” or attractiveness, He will be “avoided by others,” and people will hide their faces from him, despise him, and try to get him off their minds.
All: Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty of majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem. (Isaiah 53:1-3
Leader: This suffering servant will carry their sickness and bear their sufferings, even though they “thought him afflicted, struck down by God and tormented.” This suggests that the person Isaiah is describing will take upon himself their pain and sufferings, their unwellness. He does this because of their “rebellions and … crimes.” He’s a kind of scapegoat, carrying their sins well into the wilderness of their forgetfulness.
All: Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, Yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted, (Isaiah 53:4)
Leader: The prophet doesn’t stop there. He now plunges forward with the preposterous claim that the servant will bear their punishment and by doing so, make them whole. His wounding will bring their healing. Not only does the servant suffer for them, his suffering actually heals them.
All: But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:5-6)
Leader: Centuries later, the early Christians came to see that this prophecy described their savior, Jesus
All: This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.” (Matthew 8:17)
