Responsive Reading, Isaiah 9:1-7

Leader: In the ninth chapter of Isaiah, we read of a world flooded
with light:
All: Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who
were in distress.
Leader: In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the
Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the
nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan -
All: The people walking in the darkness have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has
dawned.
Leader: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the
government will be on his shoulders.
All: From this Child comes the light the darkness cannot extinguish,
and those who welcome and receive this Light-Child and
believe in His name become God’s own children (John 1:12).
Leader: And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
All: Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no
end.
Leader: Isaiah dared to hope, dared to look ahead through the
darkness of a nations’ fallenness, dared to believe that some
miracle child was coming out of who-knows-where to bring a
new dawn, a new Kingdom unlike any other. And he was
more on target than he could have ever known.
All: He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD
Almighty will accomplish this.
Leader: Isaiah not only announces the light; he describes the impact
of it: endless peace, justice and righteousness. And who is this
for? That’s the best part of all! Isaiah saw Zebulun and
Naphtali, known in New Testament times as Galilee. That was
where the light would most shine. That was where Jesus was to
carry out most of His ministry. (Isaiah 9:1-2, 6-7 NIV)

Old churches must not simply stand as monuments to the past but as spiritual grandparents that have invested in the future by passing on their life to others and releasing their offspring to form new congregations. ~ unknown
